【英译1】 The Master said: “Honeyed words and flattering looks seldom speak of love.”
【英译2】The Master said, "Fine words and an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with true virtue."
【英译3】Confucius said,"Clever talk and a pretentious manner are seldom compatible with the benevolent."
【英译4】The Master said: Those of crafty words and ingratiating expression are rarely ren.
Note:
Ren (仁): The key moral term in the Analects. Rendered as‘humanity,’ ‘goodness,’ etc.; its rich meaning is a mystery to many in the text, and defies translation.
【原文】子曰：“巧言令色，鲜矣仁。”

【论语新解】摘自钱穆先生的同名著作
　　
　　巧：好义。令，善义。务求巧言令色以说人，非我心之真情善意，故曰“鲜矣仁”。鲜，少义，难得义。不曰“仁鲜矣”，而曰“鲜矣仁”，语涵慨叹。或本作“鲜矣有仁”，义亦同。

　　先生说：“满口说着讨人喜欢的话，满脸装着讨人喜欢的面色，（那样的人）仁心就很少了。”
