【英译1】 The Master said: “Honeyed words and flattering looks seldom speak of love.”

Note:
Ren (仁): The key moral term in the Analects. Rendered as‘humanity,’ ‘goodness,’ etc.; its rich meaning is a mystery to many in the text, and defies translation.
【原文】子曰:“巧言令色,鲜矣仁。”
【论语新解】摘自钱穆先生的同名著作
巧:好义。令,善义。务求巧言令色以说人,非我心之真情善意,故曰“鲜矣仁”。鲜,少义,难得义。不曰“仁鲜矣”,而曰“鲜矣仁”,语涵慨叹。或本作“鲜矣有仁”,义亦同。

先生说:“满口说着讨人喜欢的话,满脸装着讨人喜欢的面色,(那样的人)仁心就很少了。” |
