Designs in the consumer and communications
sectors are witnessing a transition from parallel
to high-speed serial I/O solutions. Interface technologies
that can balance the conflicting requirements
for very high data rates, at lower power consumption,
and with improved EMI performance are experiencing
rapid growth. This article analyses the architectures
of the most commonly used differential signalling
technologies to illustrate the trade-off between
power consumption, throughput and electromagnetic
interference (EMI) emission. It also introduces a
new I/O approach, current transfer logic (CTL).
