A brief introduction to digital modulation schemes is given, showing the logical development of GMSK from simpler schemes. GMSK is of interest since it is used in the GSM system. The phase and amplitude relations between carrier cycles over a data bit are developed, enabling rigourous modelling of ensemble fields to be carried out.
