VIDEO FOR MOBILE AND HANDHELD DEVICES: DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE KOREAN T-DMB SYSTEM
ABSTRACT
The Korean authorities have been seeking a solution to provide television
for handheld devices: this is how DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) has
been born.
The DAB Eureka-147 digital radio European standard has been looked at as
the starting point for this project. After more than two-years’ analysis, it has
been adopted as the best candidate for the terrestrial DMB transport
mechanism, thanks to its native benefits such as mobile reception ability and
good bit-rate capacity.
By using MPEG-4 AVC video compression, and because the target
terminals are small handheld ones, the bit-rates necessary for T-DMB
television services are moderate and can be easily handled by DAB.
This paper describes the different techniques adopted in the proposed
standard, to provide reliable broadcasting of one television channel and two
radio channels on a single DAB frequency channel.
