You have been hired as an intern at a local engineering firm. These folks make subsystems for aircraft flight surfaces. They normally instrument the surfaces for things like temperature and ice build up. However, a question has arisen as to whether their subsystems place any mechanical strain on the primary structures.
They wish to place 16 strain gauges on the rudder they presently have under test. This is on top of the sensors they already have in place. Here are the specs.
• The aircraft manufacturer tells you from experience the strain, epsilon, will not exceed 0.5%.
• You are to use the 28 volt power supply they already have for the other sensors.
• The 28v supply can vary from 20v to 50v.
• All your circuitry should fit on one PCB
• You will use an embedded processor that has a C compiler available
• Your embedded processor is to have less than 50 pins
• Find reliability data (MTBF or FIT) for your processor either online or by contacting the manufacturer.
• Use an IA that has programmable gain or resistor set gain.
• They have had problems in the past with 400 hz noise.
• Your PCB should draw less than two amps.
• Your system is to do a complete scan every second, buffer the data and send to a PC for analysis
• Your PCB is to be mounted on the rudder and the data sent to a PC.
• Use and show components rated from -55C to 85C? (or at least to -40C)
• Show the connections from the embedded processor to your other components.
You are to:
• Locate the components you will need including the strain gauges
• Provide data sheets for all components. Use yellow highlighter on those specs that are ‘significant’ to your design.
• Pick non custom components.
• Lay out a schematic of your system
• Simulate as many subsystems as you can
• Layout a PCB.
• Use appropriate connectors on your PCB You can use SMT, through hole, or a mix.
• Draw up a BOM.
It is strongly suggested you use PCB express schematic capture and PCB express printed circuit layout software. Those two programs work together. If the schematic capture program does not have a component you need, try to find a component that is similar. In the PCB part, it does not care about the functionality of the component, only the physical package.
I will leave the link between your system and the PC up to you. USB? Ethernet? CAN? Wireless? |
