【目　录】:The goal of the digital compression algo-
rithm is to produce a digital representa-
tion of an audio signal which, when
decoded and reproduced, sounds the
same as the original signal, while using a
minimum of digital information (bit-rate)
for the compressed (or encoded) repre-
sentation. Different compression algo-
rithms will be discussed with basic prin-
ciples of design. From the customer per-
spective, the utility of compression in rea
life will be discussed. Layman will be the
indirect beneficiary while engineers
involved in transmission and broadcastin
will need the coder chips more.
Perceptual coders achieve data reduction
by discarding bits considered to be imper
ceptible to human hearing. This method
of reducing data relies on three principles
of psychoacoustics: the variation of
