RC is lossy and LC is not lossy (in a perfect world), depend on the requirements of the filter. Also, inductors are expensive (than caps) so sometime designer has to try to minimize number of inductors.
RC is often used in control signals where level loss thru R is small, i.e. input Z of the following circuit is high. lo-Z----Filter-----HiZ
LC is often used in RF circuit 50ohm---LCfilter----50ohm to limit filter I.L.
