By the end of November 2005, 91 mobile operators worldwide had launched commercial
services over W-CDMA, providing coverage in every world region bar Latin America and the
Caribbean
• Global W-CDMA subscriptions, which as of late 2005 are approaching the 50 million mark, are
forecast to exceed half a billion by the end of 2010
• Operators that have launched W-CDMA in developing markets have mostly done so in order
to claim prestige for being first to market and are not expecting to generate significant
revenues from their W-CDMA networks in the short term
• Only with the arrival of more ‘2G-looking’ 3G handsets in the market during 2006 - 2007 is
3G uptake likely to really take off in GSM markets.
• Evidence from developed markets in Western Europe shows that voice is, and will remain, the
key adoption driver for W-CDMA and that any subscription not bundling significant voice
minutes with advanced services will struggle as a mass-market proposition.
• In the early days of FOMA in Japan video calling was strongly pushed as the main attraction of
3G but it has never really taken root in consumers’ daily lifestyles. NTT DoCoMo has thus
turned to other functions and features to promote FOMA.
