SUMMARY:
Current Bluetooth radio designs use many different configurations, from conventional IF based systems
with analog modulation, to digital IQ based modulator / demodulator schemes. However it is done, the
design work has to make sure the following issues are addressed:
· Global Regulatory requirements
· Bluetooth certification
· Simple, high yield manufacture and Test
· Flawless inter-working with designs from other vendors, some of which may perform at the limit
of the Bluetooth specification
This paper examines some of the different features of the designs, the implications for R&D tests and
the tools that can help make the development task easier. It describes how the measurements should be
carried out, and gives some practical results. A table is included showing how testing can be addressed
through the life of a Bluetooth product. Equipment that is useful in the design, certification and early
production phases is shown.
BLUETOOTH RF TECHNOLOGY IN BRIEF:
Bluetooth devices operate in the ISM band, on 79 channels from 2.402GHz to 2.48GHz. They
communicate using a digital frequency modulation method known as 0.5BT GFSK. This means the
carrier is shifted up nominally 157kHz to represent a ‘1’ or down to represent a ‘0’, at a rate of 1
million symbols (or bits) per second. The ‘0.5’ sets the -3dB bandwidth of the data filter to 500kHz.
This is used to limit the RF spectrum occupied.
Communication between two devices is Time Division Duplexed, meaning the transmitter and receiver
alternate their transmissions in separate timeslots, one after the other. In addition, a very fast frequency
hopping scheme (up to 1600 hops/sec) is employed to increase the reliability of the link in wha..........
