The reason to introduce EDOF to the market is because of the pixel shirking.
Using smaller pixel pitch, it means we need larger aperture for the camera to have enough incident light. However, the trade-off of the larger aperture is the extremely shallow DoF.
We already have the technology to sharpen the image by de-convolution. Then some people try to design the lens system and hardware algorithm to try the EDoF for mobile imaging.
